B5 – Derek Ulrich
Name: Derek Ulrich
Bike: Bianchi Super Pista
How long you have been riding road/track / Burnaby Velodrome: Started racing mountain bikes in ’93, road in ’95, and at the velodrome in ’12. I was on the BVC Board of Directors for 5 years, as we are so lucky to have such a gem of a facility in our backyard.
What are your goals: Stay focused, stay upright, don’t crash on the ice while commuting to work, and mentorship of riders who are making their way up the ranks. I’d also like to keep coordinating some of the special event nights at the Velodrome; they’re incredibly fun and rewarding.
Something funny about your experiences on the bike or at the track, or how you got into track riding: After my Intro to Track with Rachel, I was so wound up and scared I couldn’t sleep that night. The next day, I went out and bought my first track bike, as I had fallen in love with track cycling!
What do you do outside of riding: I’m an IT Consultant, and have been for 16 years now. Other activities include skiing, cats, hiking/backcountry camping, photography, fishing, and remedial electronics projects; such as the time I sent my phone to space, or using the power from the dynamo hub on my commuter bike to generate cryptocurrency.
